Found in warm seas worldwide the shell of the abalone is exceptionally strong and is made of microscopic calcium carbonate tiles stacked like bricks. Abalone shells are noted for their multi coloured, iridescent, mother of pearl lining. The shells are cut and polished to display their brilliant rainbow colours.
